Sinopec plans coal-to-gas project

70bn yuan plant to be China’s biggest

SINOPEC has announced plans to spend 70bn yuan (US$11bn) building China’s biggest coal-to-gas project, according to local media reports.

The state-owned chemicals company says that the project will be built in Zhundong, in the Xinjiang region. According to the Xinjiang Daily, the plant will convert coal produced at a pair of nearby mines into 8bn m3/y of natural gas, in a bid to meet rising demand. Once produced, the gas will be transported through a pipeline to Guangdong in southern China, and from there will be piped across the country.

Work on the project is scheduled to be completed in the next 8–10 years.

China is the world’s largest consumer of coal, though in recent years it has been looking to exploit more natural gas in a bid to cut emissions.
