Sellafield picks bidders for £1.1bn contract

SELLAFIELD has selected Arup and Morgan Sindall as its preferred bidder for a five-year infrastructure asset services contract worth £1.1bn (US$1.7bn).
Arup and Morgan Sindall, working alongside Sellafield, will project manage and deliver services for all infrastructure assets at the 6 km2 nuclear site – the largest in Europe with more than 1,300 buildings and some 355 decommissioning projects.
The contract is chiefly targeted at utilities, including generation and distribution of steam, electricity, and compressed air; water supply; and storage and distribution of bulk chemicals. It also covers non-utility assets such as emergency management systems and facilities for analytical services.
Sellafield says the so-called Infrastructure Strategic Alliance (ISA) will allow it to take advantage of the supply chain and help the company complete its decommissioning activities more efficiently, reducing the cost to UK taxpayers.
The ISA contract is expected to be formally signed later this year and could be extended for a further ten years.
The ISA is the second in a series of collaborative long-term contracts, following a design service alliance announced in February, that is expected to see £9bn worth of contracts issued over two years.
