KOREA’S Samsung Engineering has been awarded an US$871m contract to expand the Yanbu lubricants refinery in Saudi Arabia.

It will be carrying out the work on behalf of the Saudi Aramco Lubricating Oil Refining Company, known as Luberef – a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Jadwa Industrial Investment Company. The construction work is expected to be completed in July 2015.

The contract will see Samsung build a 23,000bbl/d hydrocracking unit, a 19,000 bbl/d dewaxing complex and a 95 t/d hydrogen manufacturing sulphur recovery complex, as well several substations and cooling towers. The expansion project will boost the refinery’s capacity from 280,000 t/y to 710,000 t/y of lubricants.

Samsung has carried out several contracts for Saudi Aramco, which owns 70% of Luberef, including the Shaybah Natural Gas Liquids complex.
