SOLVAY has launched a €300,000 (US$385,000) prize to recognise major research discoveries that could shape the future of the chemical sciences and drive human progress.
The biennial ‘Chemistry for the Future Prize’ has been launched on the 150th anniversary of the company’s foundation by Ernest Solvay. It will endorse basic research and underline the essential role of chemistry as a science and an industry to help solve some of the most pressing issues facing the world.
Solvay says an independent nomination committee of 15 eminent scientists will propose researchers from various fields including chemical engineering, biochemistry, material sciences and biophysics.
Hakan Wennerström, professor of physical chemistry at Lund University, Sweden, will chair a prize jury to select the overall winner.
The inaugural awards ceremony will be held in Brussels next year.
