JGC wins contract for Japan’s first CCS demo

Will be sited near oil refinery in Hokkaido

JAPANESE engineering firm JGC has won a contract to build the core facilities at Japan’s first CCS demonstration project.

The plant, which will be built next to an oil refinery owned by Idemitsu Kosan in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, will have the capacity to store 200,000 t/y of carbon dioxide. It includes capture, compression, transportation and injection facilities. The project to build it is being run by Japan CCS, a privately-owned company set up in 2008 to launch CCS technology in Japan. JGC will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning work.

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced plans in 2008 to introduce CCS technology into Japan after 2020. Japan CCS conducted geological tests to find suitable CCS sites for METI. In December 2011, METI announced that Tomokomai was to be its first demonstration plant and selected Japan CCS to lead the project.
