IChemE: a leading professional body

IChemE is the qualifying and professional body for chemical engineers. With the additional role of learned society, the Institution has continuously expanded and today has an international membership approaching 25,000.

The Institution’s modern headquarters in Rugby, Warwickshire, are home to around 80 members of staff, including the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operations Officer and IChemE directors. IChemE also has a small office in Westminster, London.

Managing, administrating and liasing with the Institution’s large membership relies on the expertise of IChemE’s Membership and Member Networks teams. Promoting membership of the Institution is obviously of key importance, as is promoting the large range of IChemE products on offer. IChemE has a large Marketing team, based at Rugby, who are charged with this responsibility.

The Institution publishes a wide range of books and journals. This area of activity is handled by an in-house Publications team. IChemE also produces a monthly magazine, tce, and its daily online partner, www.tcetoday.com. These are produced by dedicated Editorial and Advertising teams, with the assistance of IChemE’s Creative Services team.

IChemE also has an expanding web presence, the management of which is handled by a new E-mobilisation team. The Institution also organises frequent conferences and courses, which is handled by an Events team.

Many of the Institution’s activities are supported by an in-house External Relations team, who are also charged with raising the profile of IChemE and the chemical engineering profession more generally. Rugby is also home to a Library and Information Service for members.

As with most organisations, the Institution’s activities would not be possible without the assistance of its Central Fulfilment, Finance, Information Technology and Post Room teams. All in all, the relatively small IChemE HQ that is Davis Building is home to a diverse range of activities and staff, without whom the Institution could not operate.

IChemE is committed to the continuing development of its staff, and has recently been re-recognised as an Investor in People. The Institution offers competitive pay rates and a contributory pension scheme.

With a recent strategy review of the Institution’s operations now being implemented, 2002 is an exciting and interesting time for IChemE and its staff teams.
