ACCI calls for worker training subsidy

THE Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has released a five-fold plan to tackle the ageing workforce, covering policies targeting population, budgetary pressures, the labour market, retirement income and market impact.

The ACCI recommends that employers should be paid a bonus for workers doing formal training.

It said that the government and industry need to cooperate to encourage older people to stay in the workforce, and to increase the number of young taxpayers.

The lobby group called for a learning bonus for workers doing formal training, which could be used to subsidise employer costs or passed on to the employee.

"The measurable outcomes of the scheme would be the formal recognition of skills of the Australian workforce and encouragement of up-skilling workers," ACCI said in its monthly newsletter.

It also called for compulsory employee superannuation contributions, and disincentives for taxpayer-funded early retirement.
